There was a time when I thought wellness required a complete lifestyle overhaul. All or nothing!
I imagined waking up before sunrise, drinking green juice, following a perfect workout routine, and somehow finding hours each day for self-care.
As a mom of two who works part-time, I’ve learned that most of us don’t need more complicated wellness routines. We need simple habits that fit into real life.
Over the years, I’ve discovered that the habits that make the biggest difference are often the smallest ones. They don’t require perfection, expensive products, or a complete schedule reset. They simply help me feel more grounded, energized, and present.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, these are the soft wellness habits I come back to again and again.
1. Drink Water Before Coffee
Don’t worry – I am not giving up my coffee!
But one habit that helps me feel noticeably better is drinking a large glass of water before my first cup.
After a full night’s sleep, our bodies are naturally dehydrated. Starting the day with water helps me feel more awake, improves my energy, and often reduces those mid-morning headaches that can creep in.
I keep a water bottle on my nightstand as a simple reminder.
Remember: wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with a glass of water. And that coffee tastes even better as a reward afterwards!
2. Prioritize Protein at Breakfast
For years, I grabbed whatever was easiest in the morning.
The result?
I was hungry again an hour later.
Now I try to include protein in my breakfast whenever possible.
Some simple favorites:
- eggs and sourdough toast
- greek yogurt with berries
- overnight oats
- cottage cheese and fruit
- a protein smoothie on busy mornings
I’m a huge fan of make ahead breakfasts to easy the morning rush! When I start my day with protein, I feel fuller longer, have steadier energy, and experience fewer afternoon crashes.
3. Get Outside Every Day
One of the most underrated wellness habits is simply stepping outside.
Even ten minutes can make a difference.
Fresh air, sunshine, and a change of scenery help me reset mentally when the day feels heavy or overwhelming.
Some days this looks like:
- watering the garden
- sitting on the porch with coffee
- putting my feet in the grass while the kids play outside
- taking a quick walk around the neighborhood
It’s amazing how often nature provides exactly what I need.
4. Take a Daily Walk
I mentioned this above, but it deserves its own section! Walking has become one of my favorite forms of self-care.
It’s free.
It’s simple.
And it doesn’t require perfect motivation.
Some days I listen to a podcast.
Some days I call a friend.
Some days I simply enjoy the quiet.
Walking helps me process stress, improve my mood, and create a little space between all the responsibilities of motherhood and work.
The goal isn’t a certain number of steps. The goal is simply movement!
5. Let Sunlight into Your Home
One of my favorite morning rituals is opening the blinds throughout the house.
Natural light instantly makes our home feel brighter and more welcoming.
It’s a tiny habit that signals the start of a new day and helps me feel more awakr and energized.
When possible, I also try to spend a few minutes outside in the morning sunlight, with my feet in the grass, weather permitting.
It’s a gentle way to help my body wake up naturally.
6. Make Time for Something Your Enjoy
As women, it’s easy to spend our days caring for everyone else. Somewhere along the way, we forget that our own joy matters too.
I’ve learned that wellness isn’t just about healthy food and exercise. It’s also about doing this that make us feel alive.
For me, that might be:
- reading a good book
- spending time in the garden
- listening to music while cooking
- working on a simple project around the house
The activity itself isn’t what matters. What matters is making space for joy.
7. Protect Time With Friends
One of the healthiest things we can do is stay connected to other people.
When life gets busy, friendships are often the first thing to disappear.
I’ve learned that even a quick coffee date, a phone call, or a walk with a friend can completely change my perspective.
We were never meant to carry life’s responsibilities alone.
Community is a form of wellness too.
8. Create Small Moments of Selt-Care
When many people hear the phrase “self-care”, they imagine expensive spa days or weekend retreats.
While those things are lovely, most of us need something more realistic.
For me, self-care often looks like:
- reading before bed
- taking a longer shower
- lighting a candle while cleaning the kitchen
- making my favorite cup of tea
- saying no to something that would leave me overwhelmed
The goal isn’t indulgence. The goal is caring for yourself with the same kindness you offer everyone else.
9. Give Yourself Permission to Rest
This is the hardest one for me, but I have found it to be the most important wellness habit of all.
Not every day needs to be productive. Not every moment needs to be optimized. Some seasons require more rest than others.
I’ve learned that slowing doesn’t isn’t laziness. Sometimes it is exactly what allows us to show up better for the people we love.
A Gentle Reminder
If you’re feeling overwhelmend, you don’t need to change everything overnight.
Choose one habit. Just one.
- Drink an extra glass of water.
- Take a short walk.
- Call a friend.
- Sit in the sunshine for ten minutes.
Small habits practiced consistently often create bigger changes than dramatic overhauls.
At Softly Rooted, we believe wellness should support your life – not become another thing on your to-do list.
Because sometimes the softest habits are the ones that help us flourish the most.
